What is Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)? 

Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) refers to nucleic acid sequencing technologies that can sequence millions of DNA fragments in parallel.

Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is the process of sequencing the entire DNA content of a microbial isolate. It is commonly used to identify and characterize isolated microorganisms. 

The gold standard for DNA fingerprinting of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, this technology offers the highest resolution of discriminatory power and can discern the relatedness of strains at the nucleic acid level.

Metabarcoding

Also known as targeted metagenomics, DNA metabarcoding allows for massive genetic marker sequencing that provides taxonomic information in a sample. Mixed microbial communities in complex samples are sequenced to identify and determine the relative abundance of bacteria, yeast, and/or mold in the sample.
